The best ways to deal with night sweats

You have turned down the heating, changed the blankets and opened the windows – but you are still sweating at night? If the room temperature does not cause excessive perspiration, it is likely to be an underlying health problem. This is how I have dealt with this unpleasant condition.

Infections, autoimmune diseases, hypoglycemia, cancer and menopause as well as medication may cause night sweats. Having to change soaked bedding and your nightclothes several times per night is extremely annoying. When sleeping, you should recover and gain new strength – but excessive perspiration prevents you from finding peace at night. 1.) Check with your doctors, get a thorough blood analysis

When I first experienced night sweats, I went to a hospital for a complete check-up. Nothing could be found back then. I had not entered menopause, I did not have tuberculosis, I was not HIV-positive and I did not suffer from leukemia at that time. My blood results showed anemia, but that was it. That was me. 2.) Change your diet

More or less by coincidence I went to see a Chinese non-medical practitioner during the time of my first night sweats and told her about it. Her explanation was that my body had been worn out after all the consecutive pregnancies.  She told me to eat warm meals three times a day and recommended eating lots of vegetables and nuts. I followed her advice and it helped me reduce the perspiration tremendously, my energy level increased again. Sweating causes a significant loss in minerals and trace elements – make sure to get some vitamin supplements.

3.) Use adequate nightclothes

After many experiments, I realized that the best way to dress was to wear skin-tight tops, preferably with turtle necks, made of sweat absorbing fabric. If necessary jackets or sweaters above them. Socks and leggings. If you don’t wear turtle necks, try to wear scarves. Lying in a wet bed and getting cold after an attack of heavy sweating makes you vulnerable – I used to get tonsillitis all the time. Same goes for socks: if you walk around barefoot at night, because you need to change the bedding, you could also catch a cold.

4.)  Sleep in king size beds

If you sleep in a huge bed, you don’t have to change the bedding during the night because you can move around and avoid the soaked spots.

5.) Make your night life as easy as possible

Have a new set of bedding and nightclothes prepared before going to sleep, so you don’t have to look for them at night. Stay close to a heating or have a little heater in your room that you can turn on when you are changing.
